Thermo Auricular Therapy

What is Thermo Auricular Therapy?
For many civilisations, treatments using the ear were common, notably in Asia and the Siberian prairies. Eventually this practise travelled to the Americas, notably the Pueblo people, with a spirituality and medicinal use of candles. Ancient wall paintings such as those found in the Grand Canyon show shamanic healers using these in ceremonial rituals.

The practice then reached the modern world through the Native American tribe of the Hopi, from whom the traditional candle has been developed.
What is it used for?
Ear candling is useful in many conditions -
  • Excessive or compacted ear wax

  • Allergic Rhinitis such as hay fever
  • Glue ear or blocked Eustachian tube
  • Patulous Eustachian tube intermittently open
  • Colds, headaches or migraines
  • Tinnitus and noises in ear
  • Neuralgia, Bell’s palsy, Menieres disease
  • Swimmers, surfers or divers ear
  • Labrynthitis, flying problems
  • Loss of smell temporarily
FAQ's
Does it hurt?
No, in fact it is very relaxing and the only sensation felt is a slight “hissing” sound or the occasional “splutter”. It has been likened to bacon sizzling without the smell!

Why should I have a treatment?
As it is a gentle and non-invasive treatment, unlike syringing which can sometimes be harmful or painful, ear candling brings the benefits of aromatherapy and heat to dissipate problems. Any treatment involving the ear requires gentle care and consideration, and this complementary therapy provides holistic results without stress.

Is it dangerous to have a candle in my ear?
No there is absolutely no danger at all. Although the candle is lit the flame is never closer to the ear than 10cm (4”) and there is minimal heat.

Is it a wax candle?
Yes, it is made of cotton impregnated with beeswax and contains honey extracts, sage (Salvia Officinalis), St John’s Wort (Hypericum Perforatum), chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis) and beta-carotene (Vitamin A). Each candle contains a filter which stops any residue falling into the ear, and during the treatment the side of the face is covered with a tissue to prevent any ash falling on the skin or hair.

What is left after it has burnt?
After the treatment the candle will be opened and shown to you and the contents discussed and explained. Note that there will be no ear wax in the candle - it does not draw wax up out of the ear, but there will be a residue of powder and possible beeswax. Each client will be given a leaflet to take home explaining the results of the treatment and any follow-up required.
What is the treatment?
Lying on your side, the candle is placed against the outer ear - it is not inserted into the ear - to create a seal and, once lit, there is a “chimney” effect which creates an air flow. The essential oils gradually vaporize and are absorbed by the eardrum, gently massaging and soothing any irritated areas. At the same time, pressure within the inner ear is regulated and helps to clear the sinuses if blocked.

The combination of the slow massage, oils and slight heat create the holistic treatment to peripheral blood circulation, aiding the immune system and strengthening lymph glands which stimulates energy points on the outer ear.

Each ear takes about 10/12 minutes, and this is followed by a soothing facial and neck massage which further eases the sinuses and increases blood and lymph circulation, eliminating toxins and returning a sense of relaxation and well-being.

Note: As a facial massage is included, please remove all make-up before attending the clinic.
Is it safe?
Yes it is safe, as I always take a medical history first and if there is any doubt as to treatment it will not be carried out.

There are many types of candle on the market, at varying prices, but I only use the best quality candle manufactured by BIOSUN, recognised as the leading product.
Who cannot have treatment?
Please note that treatment will not be carried out if suffering from any of the following -
  • Perforated eardrum within one year
  • Grommets or drainage devices inserted
  • Cochlear implant fitted
  • Inflammation, eczema or psoriasis
  • Any allergy to any of the constituents
  • Under medical supervision specifically for the ear
  • On any antibiotics or other medication involving the ear
  • Severe dental work such as root canal treatment creating pain or spasm in jaw
  • Any current healing process involving the head
  • Any neck problem impairing mobility

Note: Diabetics can be treated but clients should have their blood glucose meter with them and insulin if used, as there is a possibility of lowering their levels with the treatment.

Pregnancy and treatment
No treatment will be given in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. If you suspect you may be pregnant and it has not been confirmed, please be advised not to ask for treatment.

Part of the facial and neck treatment will be omitted in pregnancy after 3 months for the following reasons:-
  • The Gall Bladder meridian has a “descending point” along its pathway and if stimulated in the wrong area can have a “descending” effect on the foetus, possibly causing a miscarriage.
  • The Spleen meridian has a “dilation point” along its channel meaning that stimulation here could cause the cervix to dilate early, again causing miscarriage.
